Localisation buys you players, not ratings. That is the clearest signal in this week's Steam release chart, and it cuts against how most solo developers think about the decision — as a quality upgrade they will get to once the game is good enough.
We pulled the language support, chart position, review count and review percentage for every indie release on the Steam 250 Top 50 of the Past Week for 19–25 October 2026. The pattern is consistent enough to act on, and weak enough that you should read the caveats before you spend money on it.

What the numbers actually say
Localisation does not predict chart position
This is the finding that should stop you over-investing. The two most heavily localised games on the board landed at #19 and #49. The four English-only indies in the top 30 landed at #13, #14, #20 and #24. Steam 250's weekly list is rating-weighted, and nothing about translating your menus makes your game better, so this is exactly what you would expect — but it is worth stating, because developers routinely describe localisation as something that will "help the game do well".
Localisation does predict review volume
The two largest review counts on this list — 566 and 465 — belong to the two broadly localised games. Every English-only title here sits under 150. That gap is the whole argument: translation is an audience-size lever, not a quality lever.
Review volume is what you actually need
Steam's review tiers need sample size. You need 10 reviews before a score appears at all, 50 before Steam shows a full positive-percentage summary, and the algorithm's willingness to surface you scales with engagement. A 100% rating from 15 reviews — which is where Grease Trap '99 sits — is almost invisible to Steam's discovery systems compared with 95% from 500.
How to spend a small localisation budget
If you are translating only the store page and UI, the order that shows up repeatedly in this week's data is Simplified Chinese, then Spanish, then German, French, Japanese, Russian and Brazilian Portuguese. Every multi-language game on this list includes Simplified Chinese; eleven of the thirteen include Spanish.
Store page before in-game text
A player who cannot read your store page never reaches your menus. Translating the short description, the about section and the screenshots' captions is a fraction of the cost of full in-game localisation and captures most of the wishlist benefit.
Text before audio
WOIM shipped eight languages with full audio support, which is unusual at an $8.49 price point. It is also at 35 reviews. Audio localisation is the single most expensive thing on this list and the hardest to connect to an outcome.
Skip it entirely if your game is about language
Grease Trap '99 is fully voice acted in Scottish Gaelic with English subtitles, and that is the point of the game rather than a gap in it. If your game's text is the experience — a wordplay puzzle, a regional voice, a specific dialect — translation can cost you the thing people are buying.
The honest caveat
This is one week and thirteen games. Treat it as a prompt to think, not as a study.
The confounds are severe. Cucina Stellata is free and has a publisher, CRITICAL REFLEX. Moon Sweepers is a sixteen-player co-op game, a format that generates reviews because people buy it in groups. Both of those facts explain review volume at least as well as language count does. A free game with a publisher would likely have out-reviewed the English-only field in any language.
Causation runs both ways. Studios that can afford twenty languages can usually also afford marketing, QA and a publisher. Localisation may be a marker of budget rather than a cause of reach.
Volume is not revenue. Review counts are a proxy for units, not for money. Regional pricing means a Simplified Chinese or Russian sale is worth materially less than a US one, so a 4x increase in reviews is not a 4x increase in income.
Frequently asked questions
Is localising an indie game worth it?
It reliably increases how many people can buy your game, which shows up as higher review counts. It does not improve your review percentage or your chart position. Treat it as an audience-size decision rather than a quality one.
Which languages should an indie game support first?
Across this week's multi-language Steam releases, Simplified Chinese appeared in every one, and Spanish in eleven of thirteen. German, French, Japanese, Russian and Brazilian Portuguese follow. Start with store page and UI text rather than full in-game translation.
How many reviews does a Steam game need to show a score?
Steam requires a minimum number of reviews before displaying a review summary, and the summary becomes more granular as the count rises. Games with fewer than about 50 reviews are at a visible disadvantage in Steam's discovery surfaces regardless of how positive those reviews are.
Should I pay for voice acting in multiple languages?
It is the most expensive form of localisation and the hardest to tie to an outcome. WOIM shipped full audio in eight languages and sits at 35 reviews. Text localisation first is the lower-risk order.
Does localisation help Steam wishlist conversion?
A translated store page lets players in that language read what the game is, which is a prerequisite for wishlisting. This article does not have conversion data to quantify the effect, only review-count data as a proxy for reach.
