Mewgenics is rising again eight months after release because it has become the thing roguelite players point at when they want to argue that the genre still has room in it.
Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel’s cat-breeding tactics game registered a +190% rise as a related query under “indie games” in the United States over the past week. It launched on 10 February 2026. Games do not usually do that.
What Mewgenics actually is
A turn-based tactics roguelite in which you breed cats, equip them with class collars, and send them into battles in Boon County.
The scope is the part people struggle to believe. Per the Steam store page: a 200+ hour main campaign, 10+ character classes with 75 unique abilities each — over 1,000 abilities in total — more than 900 items, and 200+ enemies and bosses. It is $29.99, which is roughly twice what the genre usually charges.
The developers are Edmund McMillen (The Binding of Isaac, Super Meat Boy) and Tyler Glaiel (Closure, The End Is Nigh), self-published.
The breeding system is the actual innovation
Cats carry their history forward
Cats that survive an adventure come home with scars, experience, and sometimes extra heads. Those traits pass down the bloodline. You are not rerolling a run — you are managing a lineage across runs, tinkering with genetics and inheriting problems you created three generations ago.
This is what separates Mewgenics from the enormous field of roguelites it entered. In most of them, meta-progression is a currency you spend on permanent upgrades: a straight line that makes the game easier over time. Here, meta-progression is a family, with its own quirks and liabilities, and improving it is a design problem rather than a purchase.
Positioning over reflex
Combat is turn-based and demands careful positioning, power combinations and use of the environment. It is slow where Isaac was fast, which surprised a lot of people who came for McMillen’s name and expected twitch play.
Depth that arrives in layers
The store page describes early runs as approachable and the systems as revealing themselves progressively. With 1,000+ abilities that is a necessity rather than a boast — a game this large has to hide most of itself at the start or it is unplayable.
Why it keeps resurfacing in search
Three things are plausibly feeding the current rise, and it is worth being clear about which are confirmed.
Confirmed: the PC version sold around one million copies in its first week after the 10 February 2026 Steam launch. Console versions followed on 8 September 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, announced at Gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live.
Likely but not confirmed here: a 200-hour game has a very long discovery tail. Players who bought it in February are still finishing it, and a console audience that started in September is only now generating the kind of “how does breeding work” search traffic the PC audience produced in spring.
That second pattern is the useful lesson for anyone watching how indie games spread: a game with enormous content depth does not spike and die. It produces a slow stream of search demand for months, because people are still discovering systems long after the launch coverage ended.
Who should skip it
$29.99 is a lot for a roguelite, and 200 hours is a commitment, not a feature, if you wanted something to play for a weekend. If your reference point is a tight 20-hour run-based game like the action roguelikes this site usually covers, Mewgenics is a different proposition entirely.
It is also Windows-only on PC and turn-based throughout. Anyone arriving on the strength of The Binding of Isaac should understand they are buying a tactics game with McMillen’s art and sense of humour, not a successor to Isaac’s moment-to-moment feel.
