Two-player co-op is a conversation. Four-player co-op is a logistics problem, and the good ones are designed around that difference rather than around the extra bodies.
Adding players to a co-op game does not make it easier. Past two people, the bottleneck stops being skill and becomes coordination: who goes where, who is holding what, who is about to undo what someone else just did. The three shapes a good group game takes
1. Split the information
BOMBANANA! is the purest version: three monkeys, each missing a different sense, one bomb. Nobody can see, read and touch at the same time, so the group has to build a vocabulary under a countdown. It requires exactly three players, which is a real constraint rather than a suggestion, and it finished the week at #1 on the Steam 250 seven-day chart with 8.39 from 775 reviews.
In the Same Boat does the same thing for two — one player sails, the other has the map and cannot see out.
2. Split the territory
Organising games scale differently from combat games: two people in the same aisle are worse than one. Megastore: Tidy Up Together puts up to 13,380 items across 978 shelves in its largest store and recommends co-op explicitly, and the interesting decision is where you draw the border between players. Tidy Up Together and Supermarket Together work the same way, and Supermarket Together is free.
Monk Took Book is the hardest version of this, because your filing system has to survive contact with three other people who each invented their own.
3. Split nothing, and let the physics do it
Some group games are funny precisely because coordination fails. Dumb Ways to Build is physics-based construction with cross-platform co-op, out 10 September 2026. Emergency Buddies is a four-player ambulance sim about the world’s least qualified paramedics. Big Walk, from the Untitled Goose Game team and published by Panic, is a co-operative walker-talker where getting lost together is the activity.
The honest caveat
- Two of these do not exist yet. Emergency Buddies has no date and Dumb Ways to Build lands on 10 September 2026. Neither has a listed price.
- Online-only games are worth what their population is worth. Beetleball needs twelve people for a full match. That is fine today and is a real risk over a year.
- Player counts are often vaguer than they look. Several of these list “online co-op” without a maximum on the store page. Where a number is not confirmed above, it is because Steam does not state one.
- DEVOUR is not asymmetrical horror. It is one-to-four co-op against a computer-controlled threat, which is a different genre from the 4v1 games it gets recommended alongside.
