Features

Darkwood 2 is not being made by the people who made Darkwood. Ice-Pick Lodge, the studio behind Pathologic, is developing it — and that is either the best possible news or a reason to worry.
The original was Acid Wizard Studio’s. The sequel, published by Hooded Horse, moves the series from a Polish forest to the dying Aral Sea.
What has been announced
Darkwood 2 is set a few years after the first game. New story, new characters, and — per Hooded Horse — no requirement to have played the original.
The setting is the aftermath of the Soviet Union’s collapse, with an anomalous forest spreading across the drained Aral seabed. Deserted villages, ships stranded in sand, derelict oil rigs, failing power stations, a silent biological lab on an island, and roving gangs controlling what population remains.
The core loop returns: roam and scavenge by day, shelter and fortify by night.
Why the developer change matters
What Acid Wizard built
Darkwood’s reputation rests on a specific technical idea: a top-down view where you only see inside your character’s cone of vision. You hear the thing in the room before you can see it. The dread came from the camera, not from the writing.
That single decision is why Darkwood is still cited as one of the best indie horror games nine years on, and it is the hardest thing for a different studio to reproduce, because it is a feel rather than a feature list.
What Ice-Pick Lodge brings
Pathologic and Pathologic 2 are games about scarcity and failure — about a town dying faster than you can move through it, and about being forced to choose who you cannot save. Ice-Pick Lodge are, arguably, the only studio in the world with a deeper commitment to making the player feel under-resourced than Acid Wizard had.
On paper the match is excellent. Darkwood’s nights work because you never have enough boards, and Pathologic’s days work because you never have enough hours. Same instinct, different clock.
The real risk
Ice-Pick Lodge are maximalists. Pathologic 2 is dense, verbose and deliberately exhausting. Darkwood was spare — it withheld explanation and let the light cone do the talking.
A Darkwood that explains itself in Ice-Pick Lodge’s register would be a good game and a bad sequel. That is the thing to watch, and it is genuinely unknowable right now.
The setting is the most interesting choice
The Aral Sea is a real ecological catastrophe — a body of water drained by Soviet irrigation until ships were left sitting in desert. It is already one of the most uncanny landscapes on earth before you add a supernatural forest to it.
Moving there does something the first game could not: it makes the horror legibly man-made. The original’s forest was an unexplained wrongness. This one grows out of the aftermath of something people actually did, which the store text frames as “retribution, perhaps, for humanity’s abuse of nature.”
What is still unknown
No release date. No price. No confirmed platforms beyond Windows on the Steam listing. No hands-on coverage. Crucially, the camera and perspective have not been detailed — and for this series that is not a small omission.
Everything above comes from the Steam page and the publisher’s own material. Treat anything more specific with suspicion.
