Features

The best value on PC this week is an eight-year-old strategy game at $2.99, not any of the new releases.
Into the Breach is down 80% from $14.99 to $2.99, which is the lowest price a genuinely canonical strategy game gets to. Everything else below is either free outright or free for a limited window. All prices were checked against Steam and the Epic Games Store on 5 September 2026.

Why Into the Breach is the one to take
Subset Games released it in February 2018 and it has aged better than almost anything else from that year, because it is not a game about reflexes or content volume. Every enemy telegraphs exactly what it will do next turn, so there is no hidden information and no luck at the moment of decision — the difficulty is entirely in an eight-tile puzzle you can see completely.
At $2.99 the only reason not to buy it is if you already own it. It also supports Remote Play on phone, tablet and TV, which matters for a game made of discrete turns.
Alone With You is the one with a deadline
BancyCo’s 2017 sci-fi adventure is free on the Epic Games Store until 10 September 2026, and $0.99 on Steam at 90% off. That is the rare case where the Epic version is worth the extra launcher: a dollar is not much, but a deadline is a deadline, and the Steam discount will end.
The free-to-play four, ranked by what they cost you instead of money
Tales of Fear – Episode Zero asks for nothing
A free first-person horror anthology with three cases, one of which may be based on a real event. No microtransactions listed, no multiplayer dependency. It is a prologue rather than a full game, and it scored 7.68 from 139 reviews in its first week.
Supermarket Together asks for friends
Free, online co-op, and the store page is explicit that more players means more game. Solo it is thinner than it looks.
Tyr asks for a population
A free multiplayer tank shooter with no single-player mode at all. It scored 7.76 from 1,019 reviews and sat at #8 on the Steam 250 seven-day chart this week, so the population is currently there. That is a statement about this week, not about next year.
Super Auto Pets and Deceit 2 ask for money later
Both are free to play with in-app purchases listed on their Steam pages. Super Auto Pets is a 2021 autobattler that remains the standard free entry point to the genre; Deceit 2 is social deduction horror. Neither hides the model, but neither is free in the way the first two are.
The honest caveat
Three things worth saying about a list like this:
- Discounts expire and this article will not update itself. The Into the Breach price is an 80% sale, not a permanent cut. Check before you buy.
- Free-to-play is not free. Two of the seven list in-app purchases. That is a fair trade, but it is a trade.
- Free multiplayer games are only worth what their queue is worth. Tyr is excellent value today because a thousand people reviewed it this week. Apply the same test in six months.
