Steam demos are the cheapest way to find out whether a strange idea actually works. Here are five worth an hour of your time right now, all of them free.
1. A Game About Being A Parrot
The demo is live. You are a parrot and your entire job is ruining everyone day — stealing, breaking, shrieking, and wrecking tidy rooms. The cheapest possible way to find out if the joke sustains.
2. Tank Fu
A pre-alpha playtest for a character action game where tanks fight using martial arts. Over 16 moves, combo scoring that punishes repetition, and shell parries performed by tilting the hull.
3. Ghost in the SQL Data
Not strictly a demo — the whole game is free. Solve a murder by writing real SQL queries against a genuine evidence database, with answers scored on the rows you return rather than keywords.
4. Don’t Lose Aggro
A playtest for a major update to the single-player roguelite built entirely around MMO tanking, now adding a Summoner archetype with skeleton minions.
5. VHOLUME
A melancholic first-person parkour adventure through a brutalist dystopia, with a demo available and Steam Workshop support for community-made levels in the full release.
Why demos are worth the time
