Asymmetrical Horror Games: What the Genre Is, and Why Queue Times Are the Real Review Score

Asymmetrical horror means one player is the monster and everyone else is prey — and the genre’s hardest problem is not design, it is whether anyone is still queueing.

Interest in the phrase rose sharply this week, which happens every September as the horror season starts. It is a good moment to be clear about what the genre actually is, because “multiplayer horror” and “asymmetrical horror” get used interchangeably and they are not the same thing.

The definition, and the line that separates it from co-op horror

An asymmetrical horror game gives two sides different rules, different abilities, and usually different cameras. One player hunts. The others repair, hide, and try to leave. Neither side is playing the same game as the other, and balance is measured across thousands of matches rather than within one.

That is different from co-op horror, where every player has the same abilities and the threat is run by the computer. DEVOUR is co-op horror for one to four players at $9.99. It is frequently recommended in asymmetrical horror threads and it does not belong there.

The five that are actually running

Game Developer Released Price
Dead by Daylight Behaviour Interactive 14 June 2016 $19.99
Deceit 2 World Makers 14 September 2023 Free
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Sumo Digital (Gun Interactive) 18 August 2023 $14.99
Midnight Ghost Hunt Vaulted Sky Games (Coffee Stain) 21 March 2024 $19.99
Killer Klowns From Outer Space IllFonic and Teravision (Balor Games) 4 June 2024 $39.99

Dead by Daylight is the genre, for better and worse

Ten years old this year, and its longevity is the reason every other entry on this list exists and the reason most of them struggle. It has the licences, the population and the decade of balance work. It also has a decade of accumulated systems, which is the honest argument for playing something else.

Deceit 2 is the cheapest way to find out if you like the genre

Free, and structurally different: it is social deduction horror rather than a straight hunt. You are Innocent, Infected or Cursed, and the threat is that you cannot tell which of your teammates is which. Steam lists in-app purchases, which is the trade for the price.

Texas Chain Saw Massacre is the one that committed to the film

Three killers against four victims, built on the 1974 film rather than on a generic slasher template. The commitment shows in the map design, which is about escape routes rather than about generators.

Midnight Ghost Hunt is the one that is actually funny

Ghosts possess ordinary objects and hunters smash the furniture looking for them. When the clock strikes midnight the roles invert and the ghosts become the aggressors. It is the only entry here built as a comedy, and it is the one to pick if the fear is the part you do not want.

Killer Klowns is the expensive one

At $39.99 it costs more than the other four combined minus one. IllFonic have made asymmetrical horror before, and the 1988 licence is a genuinely distinctive setting, but the price is the first thing to weigh.

The honest problem: queue times are the review score

Everything in an asymmetrical horror game — the balance, the perks, the maps, the licence — is downstream of whether four survivors and one killer can be matched in under two minutes. When the population drops, the killer waits, the survivors wait longer, and the game becomes unplayable long before it becomes unpopular.

This is why the genre has a graveyard rather than a back catalogue. It is also why the single most useful thing you can do before buying any asymmetrical horror game is check its current player count, not its reviews. A 2023 game with excellent reviews and a two-minute queue is a better purchase than a 2024 game with excellent reviews and nobody in it.

Three things this does not mean

  • It does not mean only Dead by Daylight is safe. Free entries survive on smaller populations because there is no purchase barrier to a returning player.
  • It does not mean asymmetry is a fad. The hidden-information structure works fine at small scale — see BOMBANANA!, which splits information three ways without any matchmaking at all.
  • It does not mean single-player horror is second best. If you want the atmosphere without the queue, Tales of Fear – Episode Zero is free and Withering Realms is the strongest new one on Steam this month.

Frequently asked questions

What is an asymmetrical horror game?

A multiplayer horror game where the two sides have different rules and abilities — typically one player hunting a group of survivors who cannot fight back on equal terms.

What is the best asymmetrical horror game?

Dead by Daylight remains the most complete and has the largest population, at 19.99 dollars. Deceit 2 is free and is the cheapest way to try the genre.

Are there free asymmetrical horror games?

Yes. Deceit 2 is free to play, with in-app purchases listed on its Steam page.

Is DEVOUR an asymmetrical horror game?

No. DEVOUR is a co-op horror game for one to four players where the threat is controlled by the computer, not by another player.

Why do asymmetrical horror games die so quickly?

Because matchmaking needs a specific ratio of killers to survivors. When the population falls below that, queue times rise sharply and the game becomes unplayable before it becomes unpopular.

How much does Killer Klowns From Outer Space cost?

39.99 dollars on Steam. It released on 4 June 2024 and is developed by IllFonic and Teravision Games.
