The short version: a bouncing ball is the only random number generator a player will accept losing to, because they can watch it happen.
Search interest in “peggle roguelike” broke out this week, and the phrase is doing a lot of work. There is no roguelike Peggle. What people are looking for is a small, real subgenre — the pachinko roguelite — and it now has enough entries to compare.
What a pachinko roguelite actually is
Take the physics toy at the centre of Peggle: drop a ball, it bounces off pegs, points accumulate. Then attach the two structures a roguelite needs — a run that can end, and upgrades that persist within it. Damage replaces score, orbs and pegs become the things you upgrade, and relics change the physics.
The reason it works is trust. A card draw is invisible randomness; you are told what happened. A bounce is visible randomness; you watch it happen at the speed of your own eyes, and the game gets to be unfair without feeling rigged. That is the entire load-bearing idea of the genre.

Peglin is the genre definition
Peglin is the one that established the template: collect orbs, pop pegs to deal damage, acquire relics that change the run. It is also the most expensive entry here at $19.99, which is worth knowing before assuming it is the cheap way in.
Ballionaire is the one that pushed the physics
newobject calls it an “autobonker”, and the difference from Peglin is that you are building the board rather than aiming at it — finding synergies between triggers so a single ball cascades. It also ships with Steam Workshop support, which is unusual at this scale.
The two unreleased ones are the interesting ones
HYPERDROP is published by Devolver Digital, which is the first time this subgenre has had that kind of backing, and it is aiming at chain reactions and game-breaking combos rather than aimed shots. CURSECADE adds cards on top of pegs. Both are unreleased, so neither has a price and neither has been played by anyone writing about them, including us.
The honest caveat
Three things worth saying before you buy any of these:
- None of them are Peggle. PopCap’s Peggle is a score-attack game with no run structure and no build. If that is what you want, these will feel busy and hostile.
- Two of the four most interesting entries do not exist yet. HYPERDROP is a 2027 title and CURSECADE is Q4 2026. Wishlist them; do not plan a weekend around them.
- The physics can eat a run. The genre’s honesty cuts both ways: a ball that goes straight down the middle is visibly your fault and visibly not, and no amount of theorycrafting removes that.
Adjacent, and worth knowing about
Dungeon Clawler replaces the ball with a claw machine and Luck be a Landlord replaces it with a slot machine. Both share the core trick — a physical randomiser the player can watch — without the pegs. If the appeal for you is the visible randomness rather than the bouncing specifically, they belong on the same list.

The Steam page lists 2027. It is developed by Dark Dark Goose and published by Devolver Digital.
What is a pachinko roguelite?
A run-based game where the core action is dropping a ball through a field of pegs, with upgrades, relics and enemies layered on so that each drop is both a physics event and a build decision.
