Yes — Valheim 1.0 is out. It launched on 9 September 2026, five and a half years after entering Early Access, and it adds the Deep North, the biome the map has been reserving since 2021. The more useful question is whether you start a new world or load your old one, and the patch notes answer that more clearly than the trailer does.
Valheim entered the Steam 250 weekly chart at #1 with a score of 9.72. Its Steam rating stands at 94% positive from 544,240 reviews — 511,553 positive against 32,687 negative.
What 1.0 actually adds
From Iron Gate’s own patch notes:
| Addition | Amount |
|---|---|
| New biome | Deep North (the final region) |
| New weapons | 40+ |
| New creatures | 10+ |
| New buildable pieces | 80+ |
| New crafting materials | 30+ |
| New food items | 20+ |
| New armour sets / capes / trinkets | 4 / 2 / 2 |
| Steam achievements | Added for the first time |
Alongside the content there is a Unity engine upgrade, a new draw-distance graphics setting, a cloth simulation system, a menu overhaul for the hammer and serving tray, and rebalanced enemy spawn rates in Ashlands.
The Deep North is the point
Every previous biome was a step on a ladder. The Deep North is the top of it, and the design is built around cold as a persistent cost rather than an event. New high-tier armour sets, tools and recipes exist mostly so you can be in the region at all, which is a different structure from Ashlands, where the threat was in front of you.
Achievements arriving at 1.0 is not a footnote
A game with 17 million sales shipping its first achievement list five years in tells you something about how Iron Gate treated Early Access. Achievements lock in a definition of what the game contains. Adding them only now is the clearest statement that the content list is finished.
Should you start a new world?
Yes, if your last save predates Mistlands. The world generation and progression assume biomes your old seed may not place well, and a 2022 world will have you crossing content you have already exhausted to reach the part that is new.
No, if you have an active Ashlands-stage character. The Deep North sits after Ashlands in the progression, so an endgame save walks almost directly into the new region. Iron Gate published a 1.0 FAQ specifically covering mods and world saves — read it before loading anything you care about, because the Unity upgrade breaks mods that have not been rebuilt.
The honest caveat
Version 1.0 does not mean Valheim stopped being a survival crafting game with a long, slow opening. The first two hours are still a naked person hitting trees, and the Deep North is roughly forty hours away from a fresh start. Nothing in this update changes the front of the game.
It also does not mean the game is finished being patched. A 1.0 label marks the end of Early Access, not the end of support, and the launch-week patch notes already include a fixes-and-improvements section longer than the content list.
One number to keep in perspective: 60,684 concurrent players at the time we checked. That is a healthy launch for a five-year-old game, and far below the 500,000 peak Valheim posted in early 2021. If you are returning because you expect the 2021 population, adjust.
What we could not verify
Coverage of the launch reports sales above 17 million copies and simultaneous availability on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch 2, Linux and Mac with crossplay. Those figures come from press coverage rather than an Iron Gate statement we could read directly, so treat them as reported rather than confirmed. The Steam figures in this article all come from Steam’s own APIs, checked on 10 September 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Is Valheim out of Early Access?
Yes. Valheim 1.0 released on 9 September 2026 after roughly five and a half years in Early Access.
What is in the Valheim 1.0 update?
The Deep North biome, 40+ weapons, 10+ creatures, 80+ buildable pieces, 30+ crafting materials, 20+ food items, four armour sets, Steam achievements, and a Unity engine upgrade.
Do I need to start a new world for Valheim 1.0?
Not necessarily. The Deep North comes after Ashlands in progression, so an existing endgame save can reach it directly. Iron Gate published a 1.0 FAQ covering world saves and mods.
Will my Valheim mods still work after 1.0?
Many will not. Version 1.0 includes a Unity engine upgrade, which breaks mods until their authors rebuild them. Back up your world before loading a modded save.
How much does Valheim cost?
29.99 dollars on Steam.
How many people play Valheim in 2026?
Steam reported 60,684 concurrent players when we checked on 10 September 2026, shortly after the 1.0 launch.
Does Valheim have achievements now?
Yes. Steam achievements were added in the 1.0 update, having been absent throughout Early Access.
