Terranigma Is Finally Getting a Re-Release After 31 Years, and It Is Coming to Steam

Terranigma is finally coming back. The 1995 Super Famicom action RPG — known in Japan as 天地創造 (Tenchi Souzou) — has been announced for a 2027 release across modern platforms, marking the first re-release in the game 31-year history.

The announcement came at the Pixel Arcadia showcase on August 25, 2026, and the Steam page is already live.

Why this is a big deal

Terranigma is one of the most acclaimed JRPGs of the 16-bit era and, until now, one of the most stubbornly inaccessible. Developed by Quintet and published by Enix in 1995, it never received a North American release and has never been legally re-released in any form — no Virtual Console, no collection, no remaster. For three decades the only ways to play it were original hardware or emulation.

Fans campaigned for this. An online petition pushing for a revival has been running since around 2021, and character designer Kamui Fujiwara supported the effort publicly.

The original team is involved

This is not a rights-holder quietly shipping a ROM. Clear River Games is developing and publishing it under licence from Square Enix, working with key members of the original Quintet staff. Limited Run Games is co-publishing, which points to physical editions.

The trailer carries the line “Reborn and enhanced for modern consoles”. Valve listings credit © Square Enix / Quintet / Kamui Fujiwara.

What is being enhanced

Specifics are thin, but two things are confirmed: new artwork from the original staff and arranged versions of the soundtrack. Early impressions from the Steam page suggest this is a faithful port of the original rather than a ground-up remake — which, for a game whose hand-pixelled art is a large part of its reputation, most fans will consider the right call.

The premise, for anyone new to it

The Earth is a hollow sphere with two halves: an external Lightside and an internal Darkside. In the Darkside village of Crysta, a mischievous boy named Ark opens a forbidden door and sets in motion events that reshape the world. What follows is a journey about resurrecting lost continents and returning life to a barren surface.

Mechanically it blends RPG depth with real-time action. You have full control of Ark and his spear — thrusts, jump attacks, dashes — and enemies move in real time too. Character designs come from manga artist Kamui Fujiwara, and the soundtrack regularly appears on best-of-the-90s lists.

Frequently asked questions

Is Terranigma coming to Steam?

Yes. Terranigma was announced on August 25, 2026 for Steam and GOG on PC, alongside PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and Nintendo Switch. The Steam page is already live and release is set for 2027.

When is Terranigma releasing?

2027. No specific date has been announced yet.

Is this a remake or a port?

It appears to be a faithful port rather than a full remake. The trailer says it is reborn and enhanced for modern consoles, with confirmed additions including new artwork from the original staff and arranged music, but the original pixel art presentation is retained.

Who is making the Terranigma re-release?

Clear River Games is developing and publishing it under licence from Square Enix, with key members of the original Quintet development team involved. Limited Run Games is co-publishing.

Why was Terranigma never released in America?

Terranigma released in Japan in 1995 and later in Europe and Australia, but never in North America. It has also never been legally re-released in any form until this announcement, making it one of the most sought-after unavailable JRPGs of the 16-bit era.
