Lord of Mysteries is officially live. SPARK NEXA has launched its long-awaited open-world MMORPG adaptation of the hit Chinese web novel, bringing its Victorian-Edwardian steampunk world and occult Pathway system to PC, iOS, and Android.
Important note for international fans: this launch is mainland China only. SPARK NEXA has confirmed plans for a global release with English, Japanese, and Korean support later, once the domestic service stabilises, but no global date has been announced yet.
What is Lord of Mysteries?
Based on the web novel by Cuttlefish That Loves Diving — serialised between 2018 and 2020, translated into more than a dozen languages, and one of the most popular Chinese web novels of the past decade — the game is an officially licensed adaptation developed and published by Hangzhou-based studio SPARK NEXA. It reportedly spent over four years in development with a team of more than 600 people.

Key features
- Built with Unreal Engine 5 — gaslit tram lines, canal-side markets, and foggy docks in a full recreation of the novel s home city, Tingen.
- Dark Victorian-Edwardian steampunk and Lovecraftian setting — heavy fog, occult symbols, and the sense that reality itself is not quite trustworthy.
- An original story set roughly two years after Book 1 — you play a newly awakened transmigrator rather than Klein Moretti, so you build your own identity inside the established universe.
- Real-time action combat — third-person with real dodging, directional attacks, and skill timing. No tab-targeting, no hotbar rotations, no tank-healer-DPS trinity.
- Full MMO content — dungeons, guilds, and PvP.
- Sequences, Pathways, potions, sanity and corruption systems — the novel s progression fantasy translated into mechanics, with Sequence running from 9 (lowest) up to 0.
- Six initial Pathways — Seer, Apprentice, Clown, Lawyer, Monster, and Assassin, with more of the setting s 22 Pathways planned as live-service content.
Why this launch matters
The numbers speak for themselves: the game passed 2.1 million pre-registrations on TapTap before opening its doors, making it the platform s most-reserved new MMO. Character pre-creation filled to capacity twice, forcing SPARK NEXA to add six additional servers before launch day.
Combat style shifts significantly depending on your chosen Pathway — some focus on close-quarters physical fighting, others on ritual magic and ranged abilities, and others play closer to a third-person shooter with occult-enhanced firearms. The studio has framed roughly four years of live-service patches to cover the original story arc.
What about a global release?
SPARK NEXA has confirmed a global version is planned with English, Japanese, and Korean localisation, and an official global website is live where you can follow announcements. Console versions for PS5, Xbox, and Switch 2 have not been announced.
If you are a fan of the novel or the Crunchyroll donghua, this is the adaptation to watch — just be aware the front door is China-only for now.
