News

Short answer: no. Slay the Spire 2 is still in Early Access, and Mega Crit has said the next batch of content is at least a month away from even reaching the beta branch.
The game entered Early Access on 5 March 2026. Six months later it is being patched on a beta branch rather than heading for a 1.0 date, and the studio has been explicit that the pace is slowing rather than accelerating.
What Mega Crit actually said
In the August 2026 Neowsletter, posted to Steam on 14 August 2026, the studio wrote that the team had been working on new content but that it would be at least a month before any of it hit the beta branch, and that there would be a longer wait for patches in general. The same post confirmed the team was out of office for the last week of August, and that the scheduled 27 August patch would not happen.
Coverage of that newsletter the following day reported the two things being worked on: another Act Two and the next new character.
The recent timeline
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 5 March 2026 | Slay the Spire 2 releases in Early Access |
| 31 July 2026 | Patch reverses several earlier card reworks and adds fresh balance changes |
| 14 August 2026 | Beta patch v0.111.0; August Neowsletter confirms a slower patch cadence |
| 27 August 2026 | Scheduled patch cancelled; team out of office |
Why the version number matters more than the news
The build being patched in August was v0.111.0. That is a beta-branch number on a game that is itself still in Early Access, which tells you more about the state of the project than any roadmap post: the content people are testing is two layers away from a finished release.
The 31 July patch is the more revealing item. It reversed previous card redesigns while introducing new ones. A studio undoing its own reworks is a studio still deciding what the game is, and that is the correct thing to be doing in Early Access. It is also incompatible with a near-term 1.0.
What is still unknown
Three things have not been stated publicly, and this article will not guess at them:
- No 1.0 date. Mega Crit has not announced one, and has not committed to a year.
- No character reveal. The next character is confirmed to be in development. Nothing about it has been shown.
- No detail on the second Act Two. An alternate act is in progress; how it slots into a run has not been explained.
If you are waiting for a finished game, nothing in the current communication suggests that is close. If you want to play now, Early Access is playable and patched, and the beta branch is where new content lands first.
Frequently asked questions
Is Slay the Spire 2 out?
Yes, in Early Access. It launched into Early Access on 5 March 2026 and has not reached a 1.0 release.
When is Slay the Spire 2 1.0 coming out?
Mega Crit has not announced a 1.0 date or a target year.
Why have Slay the Spire 2 updates slowed down?
The studio said in its August 2026 Neowsletter that new content was at least a month from the beta branch and that patches would come less frequently, and confirmed the team was taking the final week of August off.
What is coming next to Slay the Spire 2?
Another Act Two and a new character, both confirmed as in development in the August 2026 newsletter.
What is the beta branch in Slay the Spire 2?
An opt-in Steam branch where patches are tested before reaching the default Early Access build. New content appears there first.
Is Slay the Spire 2 worth buying in Early Access?
That depends on tolerance for change. Balance passes have reversed earlier reworks, so cards and builds you learn now may not survive to 1.0.
