The GDD Indie Awards 2026 were handed out on July 22, 2026 at the Saalbau Gallus in Frankfurt am Main, as part of the eighth GermanDevDays.
Something happened this year that had never happened before in the award history: two games shared the top prize.
Best Game — a first-ever tie
The headline category, worth €3,000, ended in a split decision. The jury could not separate two very different projects:
The Berlin Apartment — Blue Backpack
A narrative game set across decades in a single Berlin apartment, following the lives that pass through it. It was the most-decorated title of the night.
Umfeld — Team AusWege, Hochschule RheinMain
A student project from Hochschule RheinMain taking joint first place alongside a commercially published game. That is unusual at any awards ceremony, and it is the more interesting half of the story.
Blue Backpack dominated the evening
Beyond sharing the main prize, The Berlin Apartment also took:
- Best Story (Beste Geschichte)
- Best Sound (Bester Klang)
Going into the ceremony, Blue Backpack held seven nominations across two games — The Berlin Apartment and Constance — which put the studio in direct competition with itself in multiple categories. Constance was also nominated for Best Game.
How the GDD Indie Award works
The award is organised by Assemble Entertainment, the Wiesbaden-based publisher that also runs GermanDevDays. Assemble funds the entire €10,000 prize pool, with individual category prizes ranging from €1,000 to €3,000.
The eligibility rules are unusually strict
This is what makes the award meaningful rather than decorative. To qualify, a game must meet all of the following:
- Be a complete game, with Early Access titles accepted
- Have released between January 1 and December 31, 2025, commercially or free
- Come from a developer active for no more than five years
- Have annual revenue under €1 million
- Be genuinely independent — not partly owned by a publisher
Submissions must also come from the developer themselves, not from a publisher or third party. The combined effect is an award that structurally cannot be won by a mid-size studio with a marketing department, which is exactly the point.
There is a prize for the worst game
Alongside the serious categories sits Beste Biberkacke — roughly “best beaver droppings” — awarded to the worst game, carrying €100 that gets donated to charity.
It is a small thing, but it tells you the tone of an event run by people who make games rather than people who sell them.
Why a student game tying for first matters
Umfeld sharing the top prize with a published commercial title is the most quietly significant result here.
Student projects are usually confined to their own category, judged against each other and gently praised. Placing one first alongside a professional release — in a competition with a real €10,000 pool and strict independence criteria — says the jury judged on the work rather than the circumstances.
For anyone in a games course wondering whether the project they are building has a route beyond their degree, that is a more useful data point than most careers advice.
GermanDevDays 2026 in context
The eighth edition ran 22–23 July 2026 in Frankfurt am Main. Alongside the awards, the event allocated twelve free exhibitor tables to indie studios, including free roll-up banners — a genuinely practical form of support that costs a small studio nothing to accept.
Germany has quietly built one of the more functional indie support ecosystems in Europe. Between GDD, the gamescom dev awards in Cologne and Games Ground in Berlin, there are several routes for a small German studio to get in front of a jury and an audience without a publisher.
