Gamescom is the biggest games event in the world, and every year the interesting part happens away from the AAA stages. The gamescom dev awards 2026 were handed out in Cologne on Monday, and the winners are a genuinely strange and excellent set of games.
Here is what won, what got nominated, and what is actually worth wishlisting.

Visual Excellence: Mutter
Rural England, 1940. Your father is at the front lines of World War II. Your mother is turning into a monster.
Mutter from DeadlyCrow Games follows nine-year-old Maddox Holloway as a dark affliction consumes his mother, and it is rendered entirely in handcrafted stop-motion animation. That technique is what won the award: it makes the horror feel physical and tactile rather than rendered, and it gives the game a visual identity nothing else this year has.
The emotional hook is sharper than the premise suggests. It is not about fighting a monster. It is about a child holding on to who his mother was while confronting what she is becoming.
Most Innovative: PRAVDA(concept25)
A narrative stealth-puzzle game about journalism under a totalitarian regime. You play Saga, a state-branded Liar working for the Resistance.
The loop is split in two: by night you prowl the curfewed streets of Abil-Gudit gathering whispers, photographs and traces of the vanished. By day you assemble stories — and the game is explicit that these are not facts, but constructed truths.
That is the uncomfortable idea at its centre, and why it won innovation: you are the good guys, and you are still building narratives rather than reporting reality. Every truth in Abil-Gudit has a cost.
Two further awards recognised future potential and sound design, and Speakers’ Choice awards went to Blue Prince for game design and to Amir Satvat — Tencent Games business development director and founder of ASGC — for his free career-support network for games professionals during a brutal period of industry layoffs.
The gamescom award 2026 nominations
Separately, an international jury selected the most exciting playable titles at the show. Metro: 2039 led with five nominations, but the indie showing was strong:
- Denshattack! — 4 nominations. The train-grinding trick-shot game from Undercoders, published by Fireshine. It premiered at Opening Night Live last year and has come back with more nominations than most AAA titles at the show.
- Cairn — 2 nominations. A survival-climbing simulation from The Game Bakers, the Furi and Haven team, where you attempt an unclimbed summit and manage pitons, posture and balance.
The Awesome Indies Show
The gamescom awesome indies show, produced by IGN, ran Thursday August 27 at 8:00 PM CEST for roughly 60 to 75 minutes, presenting selected indie titles from around the world.
It is consistently one of the better uses of showcase time at Gamescom, because it is aimed squarely at people looking for new ideas and unfamiliar teams rather than sequels they already know about.
What this year lineup says
Look at what won. A stop-motion horror game about a child and his mother. A stealth game about manufacturing truth. A climbing simulator where the mechanic is body positioning. A game about doing tricks on a train.
None of these are pitches that survive a focus group, and all of them are built on a single distinctive idea executed thoroughly. That is the same pattern behind every indie breakout this year, from How to Fish hitting 340,000 concurrent players to Leaf it Alone going viral ten months after release.
The award juries and the algorithm are, for once, rewarding the same thing.
