Grand Theft Auto VI is dominating search right now, and not entirely for reasons Rockstar would have chosen — leak footage circulating online, Take-Two pursuing legal action to track down the source, and a fanbase refreshing every feed for scraps. Whatever happens next, the wait continues.
So here is the useful version of that conversation: while you wait, the indie scene is quietly shipping crime, chaos, and open-world sandboxes that scratch a very similar itch — often for less than the price of a GTA Online shark card.
1. Shady Job — the crime job that goes wrong
The mafia wants a body buried in concrete at the top of a skyscraper. You are the construction crew hired to do it. Two problems: you have to build the way up first, and the body is not dead. A four-player co-op comedy of criminal errors that turns every session into a story.
2. Scavland — open world, hostile world
If what you actually want is a dense open world with real consequences, Scavland is a hardcore top-down survival RPG set in a post-apocalyptic Soviet region. Factions, reputation, scarce ammo, jamming weapons, and a Mist that punishes overconfidence.
3. Direland — Minecraft meets Monster Hunter
Wake up with no memory in a vast, hostile land. Break terrain freely, build block by block, and fight monsters so large their footsteps crush the ground. Sandbox freedom with a real threat curve.
4. Bar After Bar — five friends, one mountain, terrible decisions
Five players drive to the top of a mountain while mixing drinks and throwing them at each other. The drunker you get, the harder it is to drive. It is the exact brand of emergent friend-group chaos people actually load GTA Online for.
5. Half Grip — vehicular combat, one arm
A rogue-like combat racer where you steer, shoot, and change gears with a single arm. Unlock rams, shotguns, magnets, and mines, and build the optimal car each run. Every action is a gamble.
6. Emergency Buddies — drive fast, break things
You and your friends are the world least qualified paramedics. One drives, the rest keep the patient alive in the back. Physics-based co-op that produces the same slapstick disasters GTA does, minus the wanted level.
7. Dear Passengers — the world worst airline
A falling-apart plane, illegal cargo, and passengers who still expect snacks. Physics-based co-op comedy at 30,000 feet, and one of the most-watched indie trailers of the year.
The point
Nobody is claiming these replace a $2 billion open world. But they ship now, they cost a fraction as much, and several of them do things no AAA publisher would greenlight. That is the trade, and for a lot of players it is a good one. Browse everything in our games library.
