Veterum is a turn-based tactical strategy game in which you lead the last army of the Order of the Gatekeepers against a coming apocalypse. Steam describes an open world of blood cults and mad prophets where non-human factions can be recruited to your banners, with the caveat that not everyone is happy to fight side by side with other races.

Chart credential: Veterum debuted at #14 on the Steam 250 seven-day chart for the week of 7 September 2026, holding a 7.53 score from 167 reviews at 92% positive, after releasing on 7 September 2026.

Key features

A battlefield you can rebuild mid-fight

You can build barricades, dig ditches, freeze rivers, chop down trees, and light fires when fighting creatures that hunt in darkness. This matters because most turn-based tactics games treat terrain as a fixed input: you read the map once, find the strong tile, and hold it. Making the ground itself editable turns positioning from a puzzle you solve at deployment into one you keep rewriting while losing.

Morale, fatigue, facing and light tracked separately

The combat system accounts for unit morale and fatigue, facing and line of sight, the illumination of each individual cell, and weather. The reason to keep these apart rather than folding them into one hit-chance number is that it lets a unit be correctly positioned and still fail. A tired flanker who cannot see is a different problem from an exposed one, and each has a different fix.

A unit and map editor wired to Steam Workshop

The game ships with a unit and map editor, and Steam Workshop support, alongside randomly generated quests, battles and shop inventories. For a small team this is the honest answer to the content problem: a campaign has a finite number of hand-built encounters, so the generator covers repeat playthroughs and the editor hands the long tail to players who have already finished it.
