Frontier: Path of Shadows is a turn-based tactical RPG set in the 25th century, after a war with a power called Utopia has ended and new threats have taken its place. You crew a battered corvette called the Simurgh, take contracts on the barely-charted edge of known space, and fight procedurally generated tactical battles that the developer says adapt to your earlier decisions.
Chart credential: Frontier: Path of Shadows climbed +10 to #36 on the Steam 250 weekly chart, with a score of 7.27 from 41 reviews at 100% positive. Released 10 September 2026.
Key features
Tactics without the coin flip
Oduvan Games explicitly removed what it calls unnecessary randomness from the XCOM formula. This is the game’s central argument: when a 95 percent shot cannot miss, a failed mission is unambiguously a planning error, and the player learns from it. The cost is that dramatic swings disappear too, so the tension has to come from resource pressure rather than from dice.
A fixed crew instead of interchangeable soldiers
Rob, Alice, Khan and the player character Jay are named people with roles, not randomly generated recruits. Naming the squad means losses land as story rather than as a roster gap, which is the trade-off XCOM makes in the other direction. It also means the writing has to carry weight the permadeath usually supplies.
Procedural maps that remember what you did
The developer states that generated maps adapt to past decisions. Procedural generation usually fights continuity — each map arrives with no memory of the campaign. Tying generation to prior choices is what keeps a randomised mission from feeling disposable, and it is the feature most likely to decide whether the campaign holds up on a second run.
