Mewgenics

DETAILS

Mewgenics is a 200-hour turn-based tactics roguelite about breeding cats, and it sold around a million copies in its first week.

From Edmund McMillen (The Binding of Isaac, Super Meat Boy) and Tyler Glaiel (Closure, The End Is Nigh), self-published.

The facts: released 10 February 2026 on Steam at $29.99, and on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and Nintendo Switch 2 on 8 September 2026. Developed by Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel.

Key features

Cats carry their history between runs

Cats that survive come home with scars, experience and sometimes extra heads, and those traits pass down the bloodline. You are managing a lineage across runs rather than rerolling one.

That is the innovation. In most roguelites meta-progression is a currency you spend on permanent upgrades — a straight line toward easier. Here it is a family with inherited quirks and liabilities, so improving it is a design problem rather than a purchase.

Scope that is hard to believe

A 200+ hour main campaign, 10+ classes with 75 abilities each (over 1,000 in total), more than 900 items, and 200+ enemies and bosses.

Turn-based, not twitch

Combat demands positioning, power combinations and environmental interaction. Players arriving on McMillen’s name expecting Isaac’s real-time feel are buying something quite different.

The honest caveat

$29.99 is a lot for a roguelite, and 200 hours is a commitment rather than a feature if you wanted a weekend game. It is also Windows-only on PC.
