AKIBA LOST holds a 99% positive rating — the highest on this week’s Steam 250 chart — for a genre most people assume died a decade ago: the full-motion-video mystery.
Thirteen years ago six girls vanished in Akihabara. A failing game creator announces a live-action game based on the unsolved case and casts six women who embody the district’s subculture. Then the story they are performing starts happening.
Chart credential: #10 on the Steam 250 weekly chart, scoring 7.98 from 203 reviews at 99% positive. Released 20 October 2026 by IzanagiGames. Winner of the 2025 Japan Game Awards, Future Division.
Key features
Multi-perspective, not branching
You switch between characters rather than choosing dialogue trees. Each perspective shows you a slice of the same events, and the mystery resolves when you hold enough slices at once.
This is why the FMV works here. Live-action footage is expensive to branch, so most FMV games either go shallow or stretch thin. Switching viewpoints over fixed footage gets the player doing detective work without demanding a combinatorial explosion of filmed scenes.
360-degree camera direction
Scenes are shot for immersive camera movement rather than static framing, which is a production decision rather than a gimmick: it lets a scene hide information in the parts of the frame you were not looking at, and rewards a second pass.
A real cast
Seven intertwined roles played by a named ensemble — Hiromitsu Kitayama as the creator Daiki Shinjo, Sayuri Matsumura as his sister Aoi. The performances are the reason the 99% rating exists; this genre lives or dies on whether you believe the actors.
What to know before buying
Steam’s content notice is explicit: the story includes violence, murder, death, blood, suicide and alcohol as plot material. It is a crime mystery, not a horror game, but it does not soften those elements.
Also worth setting expectations on length and interactivity. This is a visual novel with video, not a game with puzzles. If you want something to play rather than watch and piece together, this is the wrong purchase at any discount.
