Monk Took Book

DETAILS

An organising game where the difficulty is remembering where you put things.

Monk Took Book is a medieval library sim from SquarePlay Games for one to four players. Books arrive each morning marked with symbols, you shelve them however you like, and at night the scribes ask for specific tomes that you then have to find.

Chart credential: #20 on the Steam 250 seven-day chart (up 6 places), score 7.38 from 51 reviews. Released September 3, 2026.

Key features

Your filing system is the save file

The game does not tell you where to put a book. You invent a scheme, and the night shift tests it. This is what separates it from the tidying games it sits next to: sorting games usually validate a placement immediately, so the skill is pattern-matching. Here the feedback comes hours later, and the skill is memory design.

Systems that can wreck the collection you built

There is simulated flame and combustion, water dousing by pail, tumbling and thrown book physics, a day-night cycle, and vermin, spirits and beasts that attack the shelves after dark. You defend with a dagger, crossbow or holy cross, and repair damaged books with a quill.

Difficulty you can dismantle

Enemies can be reduced or disabled entirely for a calmer run, and there is an arachnophobia mode. Given that the core loop is memory and organisation rather than combat, letting players remove the combat is the right call and widens the audience considerably.

Where to find Monk Took Book

Windows only, up to four players online, first or third person, with partial controller support.
