Lucas Pope

Lucas Pope is the solo developer behind Return of the Obra Dinn (2018, Metacritic 89) and Papers, Please (2013), two of the most influential indie games ever made.

The Lucas Pope signature

Both games share an unlikely premise: you perform a tedious bureaucratic job, carefully, under constraint. In Papers, Please you are a border checkpoint inspector. In Obra Dinn you are an insurance assessor. In both, the drama emerges from paperwork done properly, and in both the moral weight arrives through decisions the game never comments on.

He is also known for distinctive self-imposed visual constraints, most famously the 1-bit dithered style of Obra Dinn, modelled on early Macintosh graphics.
