The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil is the game that started modern Touhou, and New Classic is its remaster. You play Reimu the shrine maiden or Marisa the magician, threading through vertical-scrolling bullet patterns dense enough to fill the screen, working toward the Scarlet Mist Incident. The store page is specific about what changed: upscaled high-resolution graphics, and every track rearranged by ZUN himself — described on the page, in his own framing, as remastered by an older and wiser creator. A new mode adds unlimited lives.
Chart credential: #2 on the Steam 250 seven-day chart, scoring 8.92 from 2,825 reviews — the highest score of any new release in the week except Valheim’s 1.0. Released 9 September 2026.
Key features
A ZUN rearrangement, not an upscale with a filter
The soundtrack has been fully remade by the original composer. That distinction carries the release: Touhou’s music is the part of it that escaped into the wider internet, and a remaster where someone else touched the arrangements would have been a different product regardless of how the sprites looked.
An unlimited-lives mode that widens the door
The new mode lets you take the game on without a life counter. Bullet hell’s barrier to entry has never really been reflexes — it is the cost of learning a pattern one credit at a time. Removing that cost is the single change most likely to get a new player to the end of a Touhou game.
Two characters with genuinely different shot types
Reimu and Marisa play differently, and each shot type behaves its own way — some home in automatically, others trade tracking for raw forward firepower. Bombs are chosen at character select and each has its own characteristics. That is the replay structure: the same stages are a different problem depending on what you brought.
