Top-down Metroidvania is a rarer shape than it sounds

Almost every Metroidvania is side-on, because gating with a double jump is easy to read. Going top-down means the locks have to be built from combat abilities and terrain instead of verticality, which produces a map that rewards knowing enemies rather than knowing jumps.

Elemental weaknesses as the ability gate

When spells double as keys, learning the bestiary is learning the map. It is a tighter loop than collecting a traversal upgrade, because the same knowledge that opens a door also wins the fight behind it.

Spell chaining over single-hit damage

Combo systems in top-down games tend to collapse into one optimal rotation. Tying combos to elemental matchups keeps the rotation situational, which is the mechanism that stops a twenty-hour action game becoming one button.

The honest caveat

At 69 reviews and a 7.12 score, this is well-reviewed but not a breakout, and $14.99 with no discount is full price for a game from an unproven studio. Single-player only. Players who want the traversal-puzzle side of Metroidvania more than the combat side should know that the gating here is mostly combat knowledge.
