Key features

The ragdoll gimmick becomes the point in VR

FlatOut’s signature was throwing the driver through the windscreen, which in a flat game is a funny animation you watch. In a headset it happens to your own viewpoint, so the series’ one famous idea stops being a cutaway and becomes the thing you experience. That is the rare case where a VR port improves on the original design rather than just relocating it.

Car interiors had to be built from scratch

Flat2VR’s Elliott Tate told UploadVR that an artist was brought in to recreate the car interiors, because the original FlatOut 4 did not have them. Flat racing games only model what the chase camera sees. This is the hidden cost of VR porting that players rarely hear about, and it is why a competent port is not just a camera change.

Technical work aimed at an older engine

Per the same interview, the port adds a custom VRIK implementation written from scratch for motion controls, DLSS and DLAA to counter the blur an older engine shows in VR, physics synced to the headset refresh rate to cut stutter, and wheel support with force feedback tied to the suspension. Those are fixes for VR-specific failure modes rather than cosmetic additions.
