Big Dig

DETAILS

Big Dig is an incremental game with a conclusion, which is the rarest thing in the genre.

No prestige loops. No time-gated idle grinding. Three to four hours, a proper ending, and a joke about municipal politics underneath it.

Chart credential: #8 on the Steam 250 weekly chart with a score of 8.10 from 415 reviews at 96% positive — one of the highest approval ratings in the week’s top ten. Released 19 October 2026 by Dan Schumacher and Hjalte Tagmose.

Key features

The premise is a political favour

Mayor Dog is building a highway across the Animal Republic and the route is cluttered with historical artifacts. Your job is to remove them. Your reward is a museum full of the things you were hired to get rid of.

The satire is light but it gives the numbers somewhere to point. Incremental games usually ask you to grow a counter; this one asks you to grow a counter while quietly destroying the thing the counter represents.

Upgrades that actually conclude

You hire a crew, buy equipment up to an excavator, and renovate the museum for better returns. The road stretches through beaches, suburbs, lakes and middle schools, and each biome raises what you need.

Because the game ends, the upgrade curve is tuned for a finish line rather than for retention. Nothing is priced to push you toward a second session tomorrow, which is why the pacing holds.

A museum you are decorating, not just filling

Artifacts run from tennis balls to dinosaurs, and the museum unlocks new rooms and decoration as it grows. It is the progress bar, but it is also the only place the game lets you be sentimental about what you dug up.

Why “it ends” is the selling point

Incremental games are built on the assumption that the player wants more. The genre’s whole economy — prestige layers, offline earnings, soft daily caps — exists to keep a session from reaching a natural stop.

Two developers made the opposite bet: that a lot of people like the dopamine curve of an idle game and resent being farmed by it. A 96% rating on 415 reviews suggests they read the room correctly. If you have ever uninstalled an incremental game out of exhaustion rather than boredom, this is the one built for you.
