False Oath is a retro-style survival horror game set in a medieval kingdom under plague. You are Elis, a knight of Torvenia, sent by the royal healer to gather the ingredients for a potion said to cure any ailment. The design is openly modelled on the classics of the genre: fixed camera angles, tank controls, a 1990s look, melee-focused combat with one powerful ranged weapon and limited ammunition, limited healing items, progressive equipment upgrades, and manual saving in designated areas.
Why it is on our radar: “false oath steam game” rose +2,750% against steam on Google Trends in the United States over the seven days to 11 September 2026. The Steam page lists a release window of Q1 2027.
Key features
Tank controls and fixed cameras as a deliberate choice
These are usually described as things the genre outgrew. Used on purpose, they do a specific job: a fixed camera lets the developer control exactly what you can see, and tank controls make turning around cost time. Both exist to make the space itself threatening, which is the effect modern over-the-shoulder horror has to work much harder to produce.
Scarcity as the difficulty system
Limited ammunition for the single ranged weapon, limited healing items and manual saving in designated rooms mean the pressure comes from your inventory rather than from enemy health bars. That is what makes a melee-focused survival horror game tense: the decision is whether to fight at all.
A plague plot with a deadline built in
The store page frames time and the plague as the opposition. Giving the search for ingredients a narrative clock is what keeps an exploration-heavy structure from turning into unhurried sweeping of every room — it puts a cost on thoroughness.
