Because the shift has real tasks with real failure conditions, your attention is committed to the counter — so when something is wrong in the room, you have to choose between noticing it and doing your job. That split is much harder to build in a walking simulator, where looking around is all you were ever doing.

Customers, not monsters, carry the threat

Some customers act normal, some do not, and some know more than they should. Putting the anomaly inside an ordinary social script means the game can unsettle you without showing you anything — the tension comes from a wrong sentence at the till rather than from something appearing behind you. It is a cheaper effect to produce and a more durable one to sit through.
