Loot has to be arranged in the backpack, and how items sit next to each other unlocks synergies. That turns the walk out of a dungeon into a second puzzle with its own failure state: you can win every fight and still come home poor. The Vault is an escalating challenge run that feeds upgrades back into the town. It exists because a rogue-lite with a finite story has nowhere to put a player who has finished it, and the first Moonlighter had exactly that problem.
